We (a couple, early 30's) completed this trek on Tuesday and had a fantastic experience. After reading many of the below reviews we also used a guide called "Wayan Dartha" who we found to be very professional, warm and knowledgeable. We have done many treks all over the world and sometimes get the feeling the guides are just in it for the money. Wayan Dartha seemed to genuinely care about his "customers". The climb itself is REALLY tough! It probably didn't help that I had just done a 3day detox in Ubud and energy levels were pretty low but my b/friend (very fit, has done many hikes) also found it tough but not unmanageable. The hardest bit about it is it's literally up hill the whole time. Typically in this type of trekking your calves etc get a break on flat but on this volcano there is no such thing! Be prepared to sweat and your legs to ACHE for a day to two afterwards! (Tip- get. Deep massage in U us afterwards....) One more note...after reading the ladies review (just below) of a person also called Wayan I find it very hard to believe this is the same person so I would urge people to use "Wayan Dartha" as a guide. We also arranged a lift from the volcano to Pemuteran with Wayne. He arranged for a friend to drive us as he would be tired from trekking. Wayan came in the passenger seat to ensure we got there safely as his friend could not speak English. The journey was a long one but with no issues. Wayan even helped me out at a local market when buying fruit so we wouldn't get ripped off... Cheers, Lorraine

Thank's to Wayan, this pretty tough trek was great fun. The slope is long and pretty steep. Wear proper hiking boots, especially on the way down you'll appreciate. Wayan is spot on, pick up at hotel on time, good english skills, good sense of humor. I can hihgly recommend Wayan and his service.Booked directly with, best solution.

Why to suffer a hard night walk and not really enjoy the amazing landscape of the most holy mount of the island, when you can experiment an overnight to embrasse the grace of the moon and the lights of the valleys ? Wayan is not a guide, he is one of the main gardiens of the Mount Agun. Respectful and deeply spiritual, he will lead you with peacefulness on this sacred path. Even more, he will take care of you as a real friend, cooking amazing dishes on the most unexpected places or praying the holy water source by your side. Child of the mount, he is certainly the most experiment person to discover the profound face of the Mount Agun.

Mount Agung experience

There was a lot of information about climbing Mount Agung during the night to reach the summit for sunrise when a review appeared for Wayan and his incredible leadership skills on this tricky climb with the option to stay overnight on the mountain. This was the perfect option and as far as i'm aware there is no-one offering this service. Wayan treats you to an al fresco dinner half way up the mountain - the best mountain restaurant in Bali! His humour, energy and inspiration is a joy to be around, a fine balance between expressing humour at points when you need it and support and encouragement during a difficult descent. Having experienced Mount Agung with Wayan i feel a much deeper understanding of how sacred and holy this place is. He is an extra special guide with love for this special sacred mountain.

After reading many excellent recommendations for Wayan Dartha on Trip Advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com) who is also highly recommended in our Bali travel guide book we (a couple in their early 50s with a daughter aged 19 and a son aged 17) e-mailed him to climb Mount Agung. Wayan immediately contacted us and we decided to climb Gunung Agung via Pasar Agung Temple to the real summit 3142m, a new alternative route to the top which Wayan is offering, with the option for an overnight stay on the mountain. This was the perfect choice! Wayan arranged a driver to pick us up at our apartment and met him and our second guide Made at via Pasar Agung Temple at around 2 pm. After a welcome and introduction of what to expect and timeframes we started at around 2.30 am. The trek is winding through rainforest, then scree and finally scrambling up over lava rock to the summit. You can see a lot of monkeys in the lower tree level. It took us around 3 hours plus to climb to an altitude of about 2400 meters. After setting up two tents, Wayan and Made lighted a fire and prepared a superb dinner while we watched a fantastic sunset. We stayed in our tents until around 3.00 am, when Wayan served us an excellent breakfast, a combination of boiled eggs and traditional Bali energy snacks. We started again at around 3.30 am and reached the top at around 6.00 am for an amazing sunrise. We again had breakfast, hot coffee and tea and started to descend at around 7.00 am. We arrived back at Pasar Agung Temple at around 1.00pm. The trek down is more demanding for the knees and hiking poles are very helpful. Taken together, this trek, a moderately challenging climb, was a fantastic experience and we can highly recommend Wayan and his team. Wayan speaks English fluently, has a good sense of humor and a lot of experience on the Agung. We very much enjoyed talking to him throughout the walk. Wayan and Made are very professional, warm and knowledgeable persons, considering all relevant safety issues; they carefully assisted us patiently through some of the more difficult sections of the trek. Choosing the overnight option allowed us to enjoy the amazing landscape of the most holy mountain of the island, experience an exciting sunset, a night sky full of stars, and a fantastic sunrise at the peak. Definitely don't climb without head torches or a guide. It is easy to get lost on the rocks. It's a great hike if you have some experience and a reasonable fitness level. Be sure to wear proper hiking boots and take warm clothes. Tobias, Anne, Nora & Tom, August 2015

Great trek highly recommended

I climbed Mt Agung on 6 October 2015. I was new to this and I think it worked in my favour. I used a guide from Wayan Dartha and whilst I don’t normaly promote companies, the service was first rate and I will make an exception. Wayan BOTEK was sensational, I thought I was fit but watching him sing with a hand in his pocket on the descent was sobering. After some fried banana we set off about 0030. It was a hard slog through the dusty forest before we rose above the tree line. This was the point that I confirmed I wanted to take the alternate route to he summit. It was good to feel the temp drop and looking at the lights during the breaks was amazing. Got to the summit at about 0430. (3.57 all up). In retrospect it would have been smarter to slow it down and get to the top an hour later. I thought I had been cold before but the wind chill was frightening. I live in a reasonably cold area and have been skiing but that was nothing compared to this. seeing the sun rise whilst obscured by Mt Rinjani is something I will never forget. Likewise seeing the island spread out below whilst illuminated by lights. A few got to the summit after dawn after climbing the longer route. A few more got to the lower crater rim, however many more turned back. The walk down was very tough and by the end I was struggling to walk. All in all it was a great experience that has inspired me. I would recommend the true summit by the alternate route, it doesn't take as long and I would hate to get to the rim and look up to others.

On 5th December 2015, together with my 3 young adult sons, we climbed Mount Agung with Wayan Dartha. Wayan has been climbing Mt Agung for 16 years, he knows where he puts every single step, he knows where to lead you safely ....he has a good sense of humour and knows when to keep quiet... Pleasant professional guide, we highly recommend him...all went according to schedule organised via email and price agreed on ( good and fair price), pick up from hotel at 12:00, trek start at 2:00am, summit at 5:45, sunrise breakfast and amazing views on the volcano and Bali Coast and jungle, then 3 hours coming down. Descent is challenging too. Good level of fitness necessary, steep ascent, rock climbing in the last hour, keeps anyone busy as the whole trek goes through a variety of landscapes. I will come back as I want to do the other longer side of the climb, with one night in tent before climbing... Thanks DARTHA

Mt. Agung

Wayan Dartha was a very excellent choice for our guide to Mt. Agung! Although me and my friend are both very fit (51 & 56 years old) we really didn't know what to expect. Wayan was patient and kind and made sure every step was safe. He was fun and enjoyable to climb with. He got us to the top on time and we drank hot coffee and the most delicious breakfast as we watched the sun rise. The descent was very difficult but he assisted us in every way and we were so grateful for his talent and concern for our safety. I would recommend him every time!

Was looking at tripadvisor forum about mount agung and mostly all the posts mentioned how they had a good experienced with wayan dartha and team. Decided to book my trip to agung summit via pasar agung with them, and i know i couldnt have chosen better. We climbed in a group of three with 2 guides wayan and ketut. They helped us alot and guided us alot along the way. The climb was very exhausting but what makes everything better and fun is the company of the guide. Makes every bit of climbing worth it, from the guides, climbing up, climbing down and of course the very very very wonderful view of the sunrise from the summit. And did i mention they provide very nice coffee and light breakfast for you to enjoy while experiencing mother nature at its best. I will definetely recommend them to friends. And thanks alot wayan and ketut for the nice experience !!!

I am not sure if Wayan Dartha and Wayan Boatac are the same person but we had Boatac as a guide and he was brilliant. Both he and his sister are very personable yet completely in sync with your own thoughts so had stories to tell but also have quiet moments to appreciate the effort being made to get to the top. Definitely a struggle to get to the top but the reward was well worth the effort. I think we were very lucky to have a guide who showed genuine concern and provided gentle encouragement all the way along with a great sense of humour. Very disappointed that I have lost contact details!

Mt Agung with Wayan

We can not recommend Wayan Dartha and company more! Wayan took myself and Holly, both 26 from australia, to the summit on the 15th of April 2017. He organized the transport, our driver was very friendly (thankyou Komang), provided gloves , poles and headlamps, and coffee and food. We started the climb at 0200 and Wayan timed it perfectly. Plenty of short rest breaks, and a very cruisy pace. He mentioned he likes to arrive at the top ten minutes before sunrise so that we arent shivering in anticipation, we arrived at the top as planned, around 3.5 hours after the start, right before sunrise. Wayan is extremely friendly, helpful, understanding and knowledgeable. We felt familiar with him within the first ten minutes. We highly recommend climbing Agung, and highly recomend doing it with Wayan Dartha and co. We must include that this hike is quite difficult, do your research and make sure you commit, it is well worth it.

Best Guide Ever

Wayan is amazing. I'm glad I chose Wayan as my guide for Mt Agung. The day before the Trek I was terrified but he was not pushy in any way. He is friendly, knowledgeable, funny and very patient. He definitely understands the needs of his customers and knows the mountain well. I hope to go back to Mt Agung one day with Wayan Dartha as my guide.
