To reach Bali’s highest peak, in addition to the Besakih Temple route, we also offer Mount Agung trekking via the Pasar Agung Temple route to the summit, which stands at 3,142 meters above sea level. This climb begins at approximately 1,400 meters at Pasar Agung Temple and covers approximately 1,700 meters of elevation gain to reach the summit. The ascent and descent typically take around 12 hours at a normal pace. However, this time can be shorter or longer depending on your speed and physical condition. This route also serves as the route to the lower summit of Mount Agung. About halfway through the trek, at approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, you’ll reach a junction. This is where your guide will assess your physical condition during your ascent from below, then discuss whether you’re capable of continuing to the main summit or whether you’d prefer to just head to the lower summit. If possible, your guide will direct you to the main summit. However, if conditions are not favorable, you can still enjoy the views from the lower summit including the sunrise, Mount Agung’s crater, and the surrounding natural panorama. Trekking Mount Agung via Pasar Agung Temple offers the advantage of a shorter journey through the forest. Compared to the Besakih Temple route, which requires about 5 hours of walking through the forest without any views, the Pasar Agung route only takes about 1 hour through the forest. Afterward, you’ll be treated to stunning views, such as the distant city lights that look like stars in the sky especially on a clear night. However, it’s important to note that the hiking trail from Pasar Agung Temple is predominantly rocky and gravelly. Some sections are quite steep and require the use of safety ropes for climbers. Therefore, physical preparation and adequate climbing equipment are highly recommended. Mount Agung trekking through Pasar Agung Temple usually starts at 00:00–00:30 in the morning, so that climbers can arrive at the summit in time to witness the beauty of the reddish light before sunrise, as well as the sunrise moment from the highest point in Bali.
